Walker's 1962 Incorporation After 125 Years as a Township
Walker Township organized December 30, 1837 as Kent County's second township, covering all land north of the Grand River and first settled that year by Samuel and Lydia White. It stayed a township until renewed pressure to annex its industrial land led to incorporation as a city on November 8, 1962.
Rooflines From a Concentrated Early-1960s Build-Out
A large share of Walker's residential roofs date to the construction that followed its 1962 incorporation, putting much of the city's roofing stock through six-plus decades of West Michigan's lake-effect winters on original framing built to one era's snow-load standard.
