Paris Township had been a farming community since Barney Burton's first house in the early 1800s, but it took a 1967 incorporation vote -- driven by Grand Rapids denying water and sewer to a proposed shopping center -- to create the City of Kentwood, named for the Kentwood Public Schools over Plaster Creek and Paris.
